How it works · science and sources

Slow breathing

Around six breaths a minute is the pace at which heart rate variability biofeedback research (Lehrer, Gevirtz) finds heart-rhythm oscillations most pronounced. Slow breathing of this kind has been associated with better regulation of stress responses.

A longer exhale

Heart rate rises slightly as you breathe in and falls as you breathe out. In a 2023 Stanford study (Balban et al., Cell Reports Medicine), exhale-focused cyclic sighing raised positive mood more than mindfulness meditation at five minutes a day.

Tradition and limits

Nadi Shodhana, Bhramari and Ujjayi come from yoga's pranayama tradition, the Hû breath from Sufism. Research on many patterns is limited and none of them replaces medical care; sources are listed on each pattern's own page.

Safety

Practice sitting or lying down; never in water or while driving. Stop if you feel dizzy.
